Aoki:How long has it been since you came to this studio?

Adam:About 2 and a half years.

Aoki:Where were you working before here?

Adam:“Atwater”in the east side for about 6 years. The size of the studio was similar but it was much quieter. I was by myself before, but now the studio is inside Heath’s shop so it is more public. Even the door is made of glass, so you could look through it.

Aoki:((Laughs) That should be disturbing. Are you alright with being watched from people during working?

Adam:It’s OK. It is like a chef being watched in a kitchen.

Aoki:Really! I will be bothered.

Adam:It is alright. It took some time to get used to though. The people at the front desk is great at protecting me and I get to meet many people who would not have come to my old studio.

Aoki:Why did you move here?

Adam:Heath was planning to move into LA and I joined them, so I started this new studio.

Aoki:Do you interact with the Heath’s production?

Adam:Yes. I change the glazes to show my originality on Heath’s products. Heath’s products are made in a factory which is located in Sausalito, Northern California. I add some hints to the Heath’s regular products.

Aoki:I did not know that. I like it how it shows your originality. I want one!

  • Aoki:I am going to be 33 this year. How old are you?

    Adam:I’m 47.

    Aoki:You are all grown up.

    Adam:I’m an old man.

Aoki:How long has it been since you started pottery?

Adam:I’ve been doing it as a hobby for a long time. I started full time from the end of 2002.

Aoki:When did you start as a hobby?

    Adam:When I was 16. About 30 years ago.

Aoki:Where did you experience it first? In a pottery class?

Adam:Summer camp and in art class at high school for once a week. I took pottery class at college even though it was not my major.

Aoki:Were you thinking of becoming a potter then?

Adam:Just for a short period of time around 18 or 19 since I did not have anything else I wanted to do. When did you study pottery?

Aoki:I studied business at college and then studied pottery afterwards. I studied intensively at a pottery school for 2 years and after that, I’ve been doing it on my own.

    Adam:Maybe business first is good.

Aoki:I agree. I heard you were doing business on your own and then started pottery?

Adam:I am an architect so architect involves business. I used to run a fashion company (Established “XLARGE”with Mike D from the Beasty Boys in the early 90s) with my friend, so that was a business too. Also I went to a business school during the years when I was doing my fashion company.

Aoki:You have studied quite a lot. (Laughs)

Adam:Maybe too much. (Laughs) But everything that I experience all mixes up and shows in the pot so I suppose nothing is too much.

Aoki:True. We both have been doing pottery for 9 years.

Adam:Right. We both were doing some other things before pottery.

Aoki:Yes. I think people with backgrounds other than pottery tend to succeed, especially in the pottery field.

Adam:This one person from some gallery calls me a “Ceramic Artist”,
but I don’t like it.

Aoki:How would you like to be called?

Adam:A“potter” or a“sculptor”. Of course I make some functional pots so most likely to be called “a sculptor and a potter”.

Aoki:I call myself a “potter” in my website because it sounds cute. (Laughs)

Adam:It is cute. There is a crazy title “Ceramisist”here in the U.S., but I don’t get what it means at all. Probably it’s for people who create some ugly art pieces.

Aoki:I would like to hear about it more. The potter’s position in the art world is tended to be seen as it is in a lower hierarchy. What do you think about that? I feel so frustrated! (Laughs)

Adam:Right. The people who use clays are tend to be seen as they are in a lower hierarchy. If I was selling some cups for 3 dollars each at some craft fair or something, I might lose grip on myself. But for me, the clay is just a matter of a media. I am able to express myself with the clay, and I will continue doing so. I just work with clay the best, but that doesn’t mean that the clay is better than the other materials. I have used various materials, but the clay fit the best for me.

Aoki:I agree with you. If you look at the history, it is much more simple, but the situation nowadays is making it too complicated that it really is. Why did you choose clay after interacting with fashion and architecture?

Adam:I have so many reasons for that, but let’s say it just fit best for me.

Aoki:Same here.

  • Adam:I feel like my voice is there, and I enjoy working with clay the best. Architecture needs both time and money, and it also carries risk. I could not put much feeling into fashion. As for the clay, it is not immediate but the result comes out within only a couple of days. That is different from everything else.

Aoki:Right. (Laughs) Even if it is not on fire yet, I could sometimes see it’s going to turn out great. How about you?

Adam:Me too. When I have a good feeling after the pots are put in kiln, I am so excited that I cannot go to sleep. I enjoy predicting how it’s going to turn out since I adventure on the glazes.

Aoki:Do you do test pieces beforehand?

Adam:Sometimes, but not so many. Most of the recent works, I do it without rehearsal.

Aoki:Same here, recently. That’s why I’m so nervous before the exhibitions. (Laughs)
